President’s Letter – January, 2006

By Dick Stafford

Greetings Fellow Skålleagues!

The club held our first meeting of the year at the Sheraton Hotel in Ft. Lauderdale. Thanks to General Manager Rick Harrison and his staff for hosting an enjoyable evening including an excellent dinner.

Elections for the club's 2006 Officers and Board Members were held during the meeting. The following candidates were elected unanimously:

Dick Stafford - President
Wayne Lampert - Vice President
Paul Cook - Secretary
Lee Smolinski - Treasurer / SIUSA Rep.
Carlos Banks -Board Member
Larry Magor - Board Member
Paul Alterman - Board Member

For those of you who do not read the Palm Beach Post, the paper featured Jim Ponce in a two page article several weeks ago. Jim, known as Mr. Palm Beach and an historian of the Island, conducts walking tours of Worth Avenue and the Breakers each month. Jim spoke to the club about his tours and was delighted to tell us that after the article appeared his attendance for the tours almost doubled exceeding 200 people at the next date.

Several guests joined us at the dinner. Tasso Rumell of Revelex Corporation, Peter Berlin from Peter Berlin Travel and Neomie Menahem with Isram World.

We also had the pleasure of inducting Bernhard Kainer into the club as our newest member. Speaking of new members, SKAL has introduced a new category for membership - Restaurants. If any of our members know of a restauranteur, who's establishment is involved in tourism, that they believe would be interested in SKAL, please contact Carlos Banks our membership chairman so that he can follow up with them.

By now you have received your statement for your 2006 dues. Please remember that payment is due no later than January 31st which is when the club must pay all of the SKAL dues and submit a final list of active and retired members for 2006. The new plans for payment of meeting charges in addition to the annual SKAL Dues are as follows:

Active members will have 2 options:

     A.   Pay by January 31, 2006 $400.00 for all 10 dinner meetings including the formal Holiday Dinner Dance and Installation of Officers Dinner.

     B.  Pay by January 31, 2006 $150.00 for 3 dinner meetings of their choice excluding the formal Holiday Dinner Dance. The member will then pay $50.00 for each additional meeting that they attend during the year at the time of the meeting.

Life members, in addition to their annual dues which are payable on or before January 31, 2006 will pay $50.00 for each dinner meeting attended during the year.

Visiting SKAL members will pay $50.00 for each dinner meeting attended.

Guests will pay $50.00 for each dinner meeting attended.

Each member that brings a guest as a potential member and pays for their first dinner meeting will be reimbursed the $50.00 for the first meeting when the guest officially becomes a member. If the guest paid for their first dinner meeting and becomes a member they will also be reimbursed the $50.00 from the first meeting at the time they pay their membership dues
