President's Letter October, 2011
Greetings Fellow Skalleagues!
Benvenuto Caterestaurant in Boynton Beach was the backdrop for our October
meeting. The food and service was outstanding! We had a stellar turnout which
included some Skål members we haven’t seen for awhile. Wilson Carter, Cindy
Christen (both former Presidents of our Club) and Alex and Rick Gannon as well
as Ben Murphy and Jim Ponce were there. Speaking of Jim Ponce, did you know that
he was the 2011 recipient of the prestigious Palm Beach County Providencia
Award? Beloved for his tours of The Breakers and his encyclopedic knowledge of
Palm Beach, Jim was named this year’s most significant contributor to Palm Beach
County as a tourist destination. The award is given to an individual or entity
that has made a contribution to the county as a desirable tourist destination.
The two other finalists were Lion Country Safari and the Palm Beach
International Boat Show. Other submissions included City Place Palm Beach Zoo
and the Henry Morrison Flagler Museum among others. It was an honor to recognize
this “walking landmark” who is 94 years young! He will be resuming tours soon at
The Breakers so if you haven’t had the opportunity to experience a tour by this
Palm Beach legend, please do so this season.
I want to also recognize
some special supporters of our Club, who tirelessly invest their time and
efforts. A special thank you to Dick Stafford and Carlos Banks, who without
them, I’m not sure our Club would exist. They are so knowledgeable about SIUSA
and have been Skål members for many years and bring their knowledge and guidance
to our Club. I also want to acknowledge the efforts of our Board members – Mark
Flager, our Vice President, who has taken it upon himself to organize and
educate us about all of the Skål Club’s flags and really showcase them at every
meeting which helps all of our members learn the history of our Club. Thank you
also to Paul Cook, our esteemed Secretary, Photographer and also a long time
member of the Club. Paul Alterman, a seasoned veteran of the Club who offers his
thoughts and long time Skål experience, James Hansen who has been juggling
increasing responsibility at work, taking his MBA classes in the evening and of
course new father duties still manages to give his input and work feverishly
behind the scenes organizing our upcoming silent auction for our holiday party
and Jawayne Keyser and Gail Gruenbaum, new to the board, but adding their
business expertise. Last but not least my predecessor as President and current
Board member, Miss Teresa Nix who always is a great sounding board for me as
well as continuing to support our Club with her knowledge and experience.
Of course without all of you, our members, our Club wouldn’t exist, so a
heartfelt thanks to you from me and our Board for your participation and belief
that “doing business among friends” keeps you coming back and enjoying the
camaraderie of a great group of people.
I look forward to seeing you at
our next meeting in November at China Grill where we will announce the proposed
slate of officers for 2012. Don’t miss it!
Skål!
